The Relationship between Carpet and Health for Asthma Patients

"There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that removing carpet from indoors is beneficial for asthma patients. There are no scientific studies to prove that a carpet-free environment is beneficial for asthma patients."

In recent years, we've been hearing scary stories about carpet, mites, and its connection to asthma. This anti-carpet propaganda forced people to turn to wooden floors for health reasons in Turkey as well as in most European countries. However, a UK website reported that this planned anti-carpet campaign was funded by a Swedish laminate flooring manufacturer. In short, the "raise the carpet and throw it away" campaign is far from being as independent and impartial as one might imagine.

The Carpet Foundation, the British Carpet Manufacturers' Professional Association, the European Carpet Association, the GuT, the German Environmentally Friendly Carpet Association, The Wool Research Organization of New Zealand and the Carpet in the USA In collaboration with the & Rug Institute (Carpet Institute), he carried out a detailed evaluation of scientific studies on asthma and floor coverings. The assessment proved that there is no scientific basis to suggest that carpet is a major health threat. The findings from the study are as follows:

  1. Asthma is a very complex disease, and experts do not agree on a single cause of the disease. Allergy-producing substances in dust are just one of the causes of asthma.
  2. Beds are the most important place where dust mites live and grow in homes in England.
  3. The condition of the carpets in English homes is not conducive to the survival of large mite colonies because the temperature and humidity in England are very low.
  4. Live mites pose no threat to asthma sufferers, but fecal particles contain allergens that, if inhaled, can trigger asthma in sensitive individuals.
  5. The filter feature of the carpet keeps allergens in the fluff of the carpet and prevents them from re-entering the air. Hard floors allow the allergens on the surface to be mixed back into the air thanks to the movement of the air.
  6. With humidity and temperature control, the introduction of fresh air can significantly reduce the dust mite population, while regular vacuuming can remove allergens from the carpet.
  7. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that removing carpet from indoors is beneficial for asthma sufferers. There are no scientific studies that prove that a carpet-free environment is beneficial for asthma patients. The health crisis in Sweden in the form of hysteria resulted in a 77% reduction in carpet use between 1975 and 1990. However, in these years, there was a 300% increase in allergic diseases.
  8. All materials emit volatile organic compound gases, but carpets have been proven to emit lower levels than furniture and interior items and pose no threat to consumers.
  9. Wool carpets absorb gaseous pollutants from the air and improve indoor air. The carpet also keeps its fluff until it is removed by regular vacuuming, without allowing other particulate contaminants that come with the shoes to land on its surface.
  10. The manufacture of carpets in the UK is controlled by environmental laws and manufacturers are aware of their responsibility to the environment. All emissions related to production must comply with regulations introduced by the environmental agency. The UK carpet industry has an unprecedented sensitivity to meet environmental regulations.
  11. It should not be surprising that a product such as a carpet carries traces of the chemicals used in the production of its raw material. While some chemicals such as the moth-repellent permethrin, which enhance the function of the carpet in the house, can be applied deliberately, traces of other chemicals can be caused by residues, by-products or pollutants formed during the processing of the raw material. In either case, traces of the chemicals are very small and pose no danger to the consumer. However, the carpet industry is also not idle, and is constantly working to find processes and materials that can remove even these insignificant traces.
